8.7 On a Terminal Dial In, I Get Connect Message, but No Prompt, Menu, or Security
Request
Check the cable connection from the modem port to the CSMIM2 port.
Are you using a straight-through 8-wire cable from the CSMIM2 port to the modem where the cable is terminated
with a Data Communications Equipment (DCE) connector, which is plugged into a Cabletron Systems adapter (Part
Number 9372075) that connects to the modem?
YN
Refer to the CSMIM2 installation manual for details on how to connect to a modem.
With the CSMIM2 in the Admin Mode, enter the command to set the port parameters.
Example: If the modem is connected to the CSMIM2 port 16, you would enter,
port 16, press Return, then enter
show port.
Check the port mode to see if it is set to a mode that is either “input” or “bidirectional”. Also check that the port type is
set to “dial-in”, and the control lines are set to either “both” or “modem_control”. Refer to the
CSMIM2 Network
Administrator’s Guide
for details.
Are the modem and the CSMIM2 using the same type of flow control (X-ON/X-OFF or the RTS/CTS Hardware Flow
Control lines)?
NOTE: The default flow control setting for most high-speed modems (above 9600 bps) is
RTS/CTS,
while the setting for most low-speed modems (9600 bps or less) is
X-ON/X-OFF. Check your modem
manual for the default flow control.
YN
Change either the modem or CSMIM2 flow control setting so both the modem and the CSMIM2 are set for the same
flow control. The example below shows how to set the hardware flow control on port 16 of the CSMIM2.
Example: With the CSMIM2 set in the Admin Mode, enter the following commands:
port 16
set port control_lines both
set port input_flow_control eia
set port output_flow_control eia
reset 16
Dial in from a terminal.

Call Cabletron Technical Support.
With the CSMIM2 in the Super-User Mode, enter
stat -m16 (16 is the port number). The port status
displays. Check that RTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, and CTS are all capital letters.
Refer to
CSMIM2 Network Administrator’s Guide
, Book C, for details on how to interpret the displayed port
status.
NOTE: If the port status information indicates that there are parity, framing, and overrun errors, there may be
a wiring problem or the parity and the data bits are set incorrectly. The transmitter and receiver must be set
the same.
