Chapter 4
RS-232 Application
RS-232 is one of several common data terminal equipment (DTE)/data circuit-terminating
equipment (DCE) interface standards. This chapter describes the views available from the RS-232
applications.
The RS-232-like Hardware Port MIB includes RS-232, RS-422, RS-423, V.35, and other
asynchronous or synchronous serial physical links with a similar set of control signals. The
RS-232-like Hardware Device MIB applies to interface ports that might logically support the
Interface MIB, a Transmission MIB, or the Character MIB. The most common example is an
RS-232 port with modem signals.
The RS-232-like MIB is one of a set of MIBs designed for complementary use, including, the
Character MIB, the PPP MIB, the RS-232-like MIB, and the Parallel-printer-like MIB. The
RS-232-like MIB and the Parallel-printer-like MIB represent the physical layer, providing service
to higher layers such as the Character MIB or PPP MIB. Further MIBs may appear above these.
The RS-232 icon supports synchronous objects of the MIB while the RS-232 async icon supports
the asynchronous MIB objects. Asynchronous transmission uses start and stop bits to control
transmission in which a single character is transmitted in each data unit. Each icon supports an
application-specific view.
There are three RS-232 applications:
RS-232 RFC1317 (CtWANAppRS232)
RS-232Sync RFC1317Sync
RS-232Async RFC1317Async
RFC 1317 describes the characteristics of the general RS-232 interface (port), while RFC
1317Sync and Async describe the characteristics of RS-232 sync and async ports, respectively.
